John Kumher and Alexis Johnson, December Student Athletes of the Month

John Kumher and Alexis Johnson have been named as the student-athletes of the month for December

John Kumher, Sophomore Wrestler

On the mat - Team captain as a sophomore. Was the only wrestler to place for the Badgers at the Kenston Invitational Tournament, finishing 8th in his weight class. He was also the only Berkshire wrestler to place at the Solon Comet Classic, finishing 6th.

Off the mat - "Chipmonk" enjoys the Lord of the Rings movies and Pizza. His favorite school subject is biology. He likes to hunt, fish, and trap. A hidden talent of his is that he can do a backflip. He hopes to grow up and be a land/animal conservationist. 

Alexis Johnson, Senior Basketball Player

On the court - A senior co-captain, Alexis averaged 6.5 points and 5.5 rebounds a game during the month of December. 

Off the court - "AJ" or "Hot Chocolate" watches Parks and Rec or American Horror Story. Her favorite food is just about any form of potato. Her favorite school subject is the History of War on Terror. Outside of sports, she enjoys drawing, playing video games and the internet. One day she hopes to work for YouTube.

The student-athletes of the month are nominated by the head coaches and then voted on by the head coaches, Berkshire faculty, and staff. Other athletes nominated in December were Jarett Smetana (boys basketball) and Amber Taraska (gymnastics).

September Student-Athletes of the Month

Congratulations to our September Student-Athletes of the Month, Kylie Scott and Ben Blechschmid.

Kylie Scott, a sophomore on the girls cross country team has been steadily improving on the course. She finished as the teams's #5 runner for the first three meets, then moved into the #2 slot with a PR performance at the Boardman Invitational, and then led the team to a championship at the Columbiana Invitational by finishing first. The girls cross country team is currently ranked 4th in the state, and won the district meet this past weekend. They will run on Saturday at Boardman High School for a chance to qualify for the state championship.

Ben Blechschmid is a senior running back and linebacker for the Badgers' football team. Ben had 113 carreis for 894 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. He also had 13 catches for 172 yards and three touchdowns during the month. Defensively, he had 33 tackles, two and a half sacks, one tackle for loss, one pass deflection, and one fumble recovery. Ben's total all purpose yardage for the month of September was 1,356 yards. Ben has since went over the 1,000 yard rushing mark, becoming just the 16th Badger all time to accomplish that feet.

The Athletes of the Month are nominated by the in season head coaches, and then voted on by all Berkshire head coaches, Berkshire faculty, and staff.
